We're Moving!

Mint Hill Arts is very pleased to announce plans to move into the center of the Grace Building. The new floorplan is currently on display at MHA. It's hard to believe that less than 3 years ago, we were cleaning out a dusty warehouse space in order to have a place to meet and hang some art.

The new space features heating and cooling, a full kitchen, new signage, and plenty of room to create new gallery, classroom, and studio spaces.

What does this mean for us? This is a lot of work, and we need your help. Although it will cost more, it represents an important milestone for MHA - with this move, we become a more visible, prominent fixture in the town of Mint Hill.

Moving and construction have begun and will continue through July.

Click here to follow our progress!

There will be no July exhibit or reception; however the building and pottery studio will remain open for classes. The new gallery is slated to open for the August reception.

We would like to thank the people at Grace Innovations (Kevin Cobb, Max Smith, Ryan Burns, Lionel Sargent, and Rodney Cobb) for once again giving us a boost as we move to the next level in our journey. Without their support over the past 3 years, Mint Hill Arts would not have accomplished the things we have.

Something New in August!

Instead of the usual traveling show from MHA gallery, the August Offsite Exhibits will feature the work of several talented MHA members.

At the Mint Hill Town Hall, oil paintings by Terry Edwards and fabric art by Dottie Edwards will be displayed.

Leslie Teiro’s mixed media collages will be exhibited at the Mint Hill BB&T and abstract paintings by Cindy Dabestani will be on display at the Mint Hill Chamber of Commerce.

All three exhibits will run from August 2 through September 7. Thanks to each of these artists for sharing their talents and creativity with our community!

August Speaker

Artist Curt Butler

Tuesday, August 24, 2010 6:45pm - 9:00pm

Curt Butler

Please Note: Our June speaker has been rescheduled for August 24. We will have the special privilege to watch and learn from Curt Butler, an artist who works and lives in Gastonia, NC.

Curt Butler is a teaching artist who attempts to balance being a professional artist and educator while sharing his love and passion for art with his students He works primarily in oils and is known for his landscapes and various commissions including oil portraits.

Curt received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Kent State University and a Masters of Fine Arts degree from Savannah College of Art and Design. His works have been displayed at various venues in the Gastonia, NC area including the Gem of Ashley, Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens and Morris Street Gallery in Blowing Rock, N.C. His influences include Fedor Zackarov, John Singer Sargent and Richard Schmid.

Upon moving to Gastonia, Curt studied under Andrew Braitman at Braitman Studio in Charlotte. At Braitman Studio, he also taught adult and advanced teen oil painting classes while creating his own works in the studio. He has taught at the high school level at Gaston Day School.

Curt received The Teacher of the Year Award in 2004 and has helped students to graduate to art schools such as Savannah College of Art and Design, the UNC Charlotte architecture program, and Maryland Institute and College of Art. In 2006, four Gaston Day School art students won gold key awards under the direction of Mr. Butler and went on the National level in New York.

Curt has received many local art awards including 1st place at Festival in the Park in Charlotte and Honorable and Merit Awards at the Natural View exhibit in Gastonia. His work has been exhibited at Gem of Ashley, Dallas Art Museum, Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens, Gaston Day Gallery, Morris Street Gallery, Solo Art Gallery and The Design Gallery.

In 2006, Curt started his own business, Butler Studio, where he works on paintings for galleries, businesses and private collections. It features exposed historical roof beams, plaster patina brick walls and original antique wood flooring. Pedestrians are welcome to watch Butler paint during studio hours or call for appointment to view and discuss purchasing paintings on display.

Since painting full time, Curt’s work has focused primarily on exploring and painting his surroundings including the Appalachian, Piedmont and coastal plains of North Carolina. “While most people are driving into work and notice the sunrise long enough to bring down their sun visor, my job is to stop and observe it. I seek out those places that others have seen but maybe have never observed. In this way, I think of myself as part explorer.” His style seeks to evoke a mood that is rich in bold brush strokes with sharp and soft edges to lead the eye through the composition.
