September 2009 Gallery Reception

Monochromatics

Opening Reception Friday, September 11th, 7:00pm - 9:00pm

The Mint Hill Arts' September '09 exhibit posed an exciting challenge for all of our members by embracing a monochromatic theme.

According to Funk & Wagnall's dictionary, "monochromism is a painting, drawing or other work of art utilizing a single color or various shades of the same color." This can be very dramatic. For inspiration check out Bridget Riley's Pop/Op Art painting, "Movement In Squares" or Franz Kline's "Ballantine." Also, Louise Nevelson and Aubrey Beardsley spent almost, if not all of their careers following a monochromatic doctrine. Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock dedicated periods and series of work to the use of one color. Using one color may not be in everyone's comfort zone but as artists and creative thinkers.
