October 2009 Gallery Reception

Pastels and Paintings by Martha Faires

Mint Hill Arts October Gallery Reception featured the oils, pastels, and oil pastels of Martha Faires, a Charlotte artist who can be found most often in her studio working on her own paintings or teaching her students of all ages. She also enjoys the inspiration of plein air painting whenever she can get away to a scenic spot. Martha says, “ I have Carolina roots, and the beauty of the Carolinas and the activities and people I've appreciated here, particularly in rural settings and on the lakes and coastlines, are featured in many of my paintings.

In Martha's words," I have had a love affair with the arts since childhood." She grew up in Abbeyville, South Carolina and recalls receiving a John Gnagy " Learn To Draw Set" as a Christmas present. How many of us remember his show on TV? Martha majored in English and minored in Fine Art obtaining a Master of Arts Degree. This helped her secure a teaching job in a small college in Taiwan where she lived for eight years. While living in Taiwan she was also able to study Chinese water color painting. Martha stays busy in her studio by both painting and teaching regular classes and workshops.

Although Martha loves the rich colors and textures of oils and the elusive qualities of water color she comes back again and again to pastel where she creates the map-like patterns and textures she loves.
